T20 World Cup: Why Babar Azam Was Not Named as T20 World Cup Player of The Tournament- Details Here

ICC draws cricket fans’ ire for not naming Babar Azam ‘Player of the Tournament’

Cricket pundits and fans are unhappy with the international cricket governing body for picking Australia’s David Warner instead of ‘deserving’ Babar Azam for the player of the tournament award in the T20 World Cup. Pakistani skipper finished the ICC mega event as the top run-scorer with 303 runs followed by Warner who amassed 289 runs. Netizens ponder why ICC named David Warner the Man of the tournament award rather than Babar who remained top scorer and took the Green Shirts to the semi-final.

Babar scored 303 runs in six innings, which is the third highest run tally for a player in a single edition of the tournament. Former Sri Lanka batsman Tilakaratne Dilshan (317 runs in 2009) and India’s Virat Kohli (319 runs in 2014) are the only players who rank higher than Babar in the list.

Warner scored 14 runs fewer than Babar, and only managed three half-centuries, falling one run short of the landmark against Pakistan. But he maintained a significantly higher strike-rate, more than 20 runs per 100 balls higher than the Pakistan opener, and arguably made his runs at more high-impact intervals. Australia’s group was hotly contested, with three teams ending tied on four wins, and Warner scoring big in the final group game and the two knockouts. Babar, meanwhile, made 136 of his runs against Associate nations Namibia and Scotland.

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who was in attendance for the T20 World Cup final on Sunday between Australia and New Zealand, feels David Warner being adjudged the Player of the Tournament is an unfair call.

“Was really looking forward to see @babarazam258 becoming Man of the Tournament. Unfair decision for sure,” Akhtar tweeted.

West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford was also shocked to see the International Cricket Council decision.

Fans termed ICC decision biased to award Warner at the T20 World Cup, with Babar Azam, the competition’s top run-scorer, going unrewarded.
