PM Internship Scheme: 193 firms post over 90,800 opportunities on portal; Maruti, L&T and Reliance on list

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme has gained significant traction, with 193 companies posting over 90,800 internship opportunities on its portal ahead of the applicant registration that commenced on October 12, 2024. This initiative aims to provide internships to 1.25 lakh candidates during the current financial year, as part of a broader goal to offer internships to one crore candidates aged 21-24 over the next five years 

Key Details of the Scheme

  • Financial Assistance: Interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 for 12 months, along with a one-time grant of ₹6,000
  • Implementation: The scheme was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget 2024 and will be implemented through the online portal www.pminternship.mca.gov.in.
  • Internship Start Date: Internships are set to begin on December 2, 2024.

Companies and Sectors Involved

Among the 193 companies participating in the scheme are notable names such as Jubilant Foodworks, Maruti Suzuki India, Eicher Motors, Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Muthoot Finance, and Reliance Industries. The opportunities span across 24 sectors, with the highest number of internships available in the oil, gas & energy sector, followed by travel & hospitality, automotive, and banking and financial services.

Growth of Opportunities

The number of internship opportunities has seen rapid growth:

  • On October 7, 2024, there were about 16,000 opportunities.
  • This number surged to nearly 50,000 by October 9, and reached 90,849 by October 11.

The scheme is designed to enhance employability among youth and provide them with valuable work experience across various fields, including operations management, production & manufacturing, and sales and marketing.
