SRINAGAR: Hizbul Muhajideen chief commander Dr Saifullah was killed during a gunfight in Rangreth area on Sunday, said police. One militant was also captured alive during the operation that was launched in the morning on a specific information, police said.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range Vijay Kumar said that they had got an information that some militants who had come for south Kashmir are hiding in the area in Rangreth. “A joint operation was launched by Police, CRPF and later Army also joined,” he said.

Kumar termed the killing of Saifullah a ‘big success’ for the security forces. “He is the second Hizb chief killed in the operation this year. Earlier in May, Riyaz Naikoo who was operational commander was also killed in an encounter in Pulwama and then Dr Saifullah was nominated as the new Hizb chief. For security forces, this is a big success.”

Who was Saifullah urf Ghazi Haider

A Hibz militant commander Dr Saifullah was an ‘A category’ militant and had mostly been active in south Kashmir districts of Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian.

As per official details available with Saifullah Mir, known as Musaib and ‘Doctor Saif’ because he would treat militants injured in encounters, was a class 12th pass out from Malangpora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Saifullah Mir alias Ghazi Haider, the 26-year-old had joined the militant ranks in 2014 and was currently the Hizbul Mujahideen’s operational Chief in Jammu and Kashmir.

As per top police officials Saifullah Mir opted for vocational training after school.

The top police officer said that once he completed bioscience course at the government-run ITI in Pulwama, Saifullah got a job at Srinagar’s National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology as a technician. He continued with the job for three years before Riyaz Naikoo finally had his way and motivated him to join militant outfit .

Saifullah was the last surviving militant photographed with Burhan Wani. Now Burhan Wani group has been technically and officially wiped out today.

Pertinent to mention here that Saifullah was killed in the encounter in Rangreth area of Srinagar and one of his associates was captured alive. (KD)
