WATCH VIDEO: On Debut, Pakistan Mystery Spinner Who Took Seven Wickets Enters Record Books On Multan Test, Help Pakistan Fight Back vs England

Pakistan captain Babar Azam led a Bazball-esque response with the bat as he negated the England spinners threat on Day 1 of the 2nd Test as the hosts edged ahead, albeit by just a bit, on Friday. Pakistan reached Stumps at 107 for 2 after bowling out England for 281.

Babar Azam was in complete control even as Pakistan lost opener Imam-ul-Haq (0) and Abdullah Shafique (14) cheaply. Babar flaunted his solidity against England spinners Jack Leach, Will Jacks and Joe Root to hit 61 not out in just 79 balls. The Pakistan skipper hit 9 boundaries and a six as he did not allow England bowlers to settle into a rhythm.

It was refreshing to see the approach from the Pakistan batters as they fought fire with fire on a Multan pitch that assisted spinners from the opening session on a foggy day in Multan.

However, the hero of the day for Pakistan was 24-year-old Abrar Ahmed, a mystery spinner, took the first seven wickets of the England innings and was on verge of becoming the first Pakistani and fourth bowler overall to take all 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match.

I will eye to take wickets of Stokes and Root,” Abrar Ahmed had said before the Test series against England. One Test later, the 24-year-old from Karachi dismissed both the batters on debut en route to become the third Pakistani to take seven wickets in an innings of his first Test match.

RECORD-BREAKING ABRAR

It was a remarkable feat as Abrar Ahmed, who idolises West Indies’ Sunil Narine, equaled the Pakistan record for the most wickets in the first innings on Test debut. Abrar registered figures of 7 for 114 as he helped Pakistan contain the England batters, who tried to go big even on a difficult pitch on Day 1

England were looking good to post another mammoth total as they had raced to 117 for 1 but Abrar’s heroics triggered the downfall of England batters.

Ben Duckett (63) and Ollie Pope (60) both scored rapid half centuries before falling to Ahmed in the first session as the spinner became only the second bowler in test history to pick up five wickets before lunch in his debut Test.

Abrar joined Mohammad Zahid and Mohammad Nazir who had picked up 7 wickets on their Test debut.
