Update: 3 CRPF men killed in Handwara shootout, identity of fourth slain being ascertained

 

Srinagar: Three CRPF men were killed in a brief shoot-out at Wangam area of Qaziabad- Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district while as the body of an unidentified person was also found near the site of incident whose identify is being ascertained, officials said.

Earlier, soon after the attack, security officials had said that three CRPF men were killed while as one militant was also gunned down. However, later it was found that the person had no weapon besides him and that his body was taken for identification immediately.

“Three CRPF men have been killed in the attack. It was an attack on CRPF party that was responded effectively in which we lost three men,” CRPF spokesman in Srinagar Pankaj Singh told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)

A security official told KNO that earlier it seemed that a militant has been killed but when the spot was searched, an unidentified body was found and there was no weapon with him. “His identification is on,” the official said.

He said security forces have sealed the area and search for other attackers have been launched. The attack comes barely 24 hours after an army colonel, a major, two soldiers and a police sub inspector besides two militants were killed in an overnight gunfight at Chanjimulla area of Handwara in Kupwara district—(KNO)
