Titanic Submarine Update: Wreckage Found on Ocean Floor, Key Highlights From US Coast Guard’s Statement- Details Here

Titanic Submarine Search, Live Updates: wreckage found on ocean floor, no survivors left

Remote-controlled vehicles were deployed deep into the North Atlantic Ocean on Thursday as more vessels joined the search to locate the submersible that disappeared over the weekend with five people aboard. According to US coast guard estimates, the Titan’s 96 hours of breathable oxygen supplies are thought to be exhausted — although these are just estimates and much will depend on measure the passengers have taken to conserve air.

What’s the current status?

The US Coast Guard have said a debris field was discovered within the search area by a remotely operated vehicle near the Titanic wreck. The search for the 22-foot vessel has already covered about 10,000 square miles of ocean. The focus has been on noises that search crews detected underwater days after the submersible lost contact with a nearby ship during a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic on Sunday.

No survivors after Titanic sub wreckage found on ocean floor

The five people aboard a missing submersible died in a “catastrophic” event, a Coast Guard official said on Thursday, bringing a grim end to the massive search for the vessel that was lost during a voyage to the Titanic.

“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans,” OceanGate Expeditions said in a statement. “Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time.”

An unmanned deep-sea robot deployed from a Canadian ship discovered the wreckage of the submersible on Thursday morning about 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the century-old wreck, 2-1/2 miles (4 km) below the surface, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said at a press conference.

“The debris is consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” Mauger said.

Here is what Rear Adm Mauger told the press about the missing submersible that has now been located near the wreckage of the Titanic ship.

1) Rear Adm Mauger said five deceased bodies may never be recovered.
2) Five major pieces of the Titan sub found.
3) Debris field located 1600ft (487m) off the bow of the Titanic wreck.
4) Search operation to continue for some time to find out more details
5) It was too early to tell when and how the implosion took place, and what caused it.
6) Adm Mauger clarified that there was no relation between noises earlier detected from the sea and the submersible wreck.
7) US Coast Guard will demobilise its personnel over the next 24 hours. Adm Mauger said there were 9 vessels currently deployed on the search mission.

US Coast Guard has said that the Titan submersible might have imploded deep under the sea near the wreckage of the Titanic ship, resulting in the death of all five people on board.

Titanic director James Cameron: ‘I felt in my bones what happened’ to sub

James Cameron on Zoom
James Cameron spoke to the BBC on Zoom on Thursday

Hollywood film director James Cameron, who helmed the 1997 movie Titanic, has told the BBC he predicted the loss of the Titan submersible days earlier.

Cameron has completed 33 dives to the wreck of the Titanic. He said he was on a ship on Sunday when the sub went missing, and did not hear about it until Monday.

When he learned that the sub had lost both its navigation and communication at the same time, he said he immediately suspected a disaster.

“I felt in my bones what had happened. For the sub’s electronics to fail and its communication system to fail, and its tracking transponder to fail simultaneously – sub’s gone.”
