As the scorching summer heat grips the country, most states have declared summer vacations for school students, with reopening dates varying based on regional weather patterns, academic boards, and government advisories. While private schools may follow their own schedules, state-run and government-aided institutions are bound by official directives.

Heatwave Forces Early Closures

Due to intense heatwaves, states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha have announced early closures, with the possibility of extended breaks if conditions persist. Meanwhile, Odisha and West Bengal are keeping their reopening dates flexible to ensure student safety. With the IMD forecasting the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala by May 27, school schedules in southern states could also be affected.

State-Wise Dates for 2025

  • Delhi: Summer vacation from May 11 to June 30. Schools reopen on July 1.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Vacation from May 20 to June 15; reopening on June 30.
  • Rajasthan: Schools will resume on June 16 after a break from May 1 to June 15.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Similar to Rajasthan, schools reopen on June 16.
  • Tamil Nadu: Schools scheduled to reopen on June 2, following a vacation from April 30. However, this may change depending on weather updates.
  • Bihar: Schools to reopen on June 23, after a break from June 2 to June 21.
  • Punjab: Summer break from June 1 to June 30; reopening on July 1.
  • Haryana: Schools reopen on July 1 after the June-long vacation.
  • Karnataka: Vacation from April 10 to May 28; schools reopen on May 29.
  • Kerala: Schools will resume on June 1 following a break from April 1.
  • Chhattisgarh: Schools reopen on June 16, after a break from April 25 to June 15.
  • Maharashtra: Reopening on June 15.
  • Goa: Schools reopen on June 9.
  • Gujarat: Schools will resume on June 4.
  • West Bengal: Tentative reopening date is June 2, post the April 30 vacation start.

CBSE and Kendriya Vidyalaya Schedules

  • CBSE Schools: Reopen on June 13, 2025.
  • Colleges: Begin their new session from June 19.
  • Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs):
    • Some will observe a 40-day break from May 9 to June 17.
    • Others will follow a 50-day break from May 2 to June 20, depending on regional conditions.

Flexible Plans in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government may revise the June 2 reopening date based on recommendations from the Climate Management Committee. The education ministry has assured that student well-being remains the top priority.
