Srinagar Ring Road Project Achieves 65% Completion in Phase-1, Targeted to Open by December…

Srinagar, Dec 9: The Srinagar Ring Road Project, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity, has reached 65% completion in its first phase and is expected to be operational by December 2025, officials revealed.

The four-lane semi-ring road, part of the Prime Minister’s Development Project (PMDP) for Jammu and Kashmir, spans 60.84 kilometers and is being constructed in two phases. Phase-1 covers a 42-kilometer stretch from Galander to Narbal, while Phase-2 consists of an 18.84-kilometer section extending from Narbal to Ganderbal.

Accelerated Progress After Initial Delays

The project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, faced numerous challenges in its initial three years. These included land acquisition disputes and slow progress, resulting in only 9% of the work being completed during that time. However, the pace of construction significantly improved over the past two years.

Amrish Mankar, Project Director for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), stated that all major hurdles have been addressed. “The project is now progressing rapidly, and there are no funding or logistical issues. We are on track to complete it by December 2025,” Mankar said.

Winter conditions have temporarily slowed progress, with three-fourths of the workforce departing due to the cold weather. However, officials remain optimistic about meeting the timeline.

Construction Milestones

NHAI shared updates on various construction components:

  • Culverts: Of the revised target of 148, 89 have been completed, with work underway on 11 more.
  • Minor New Bridges (MNB): The count has been adjusted from 29 to 25, with 5 completed and 15 in progress.
  • Major Bridges: Initially one, the number has been revised to three, all currently under construction.
  • Longitudinal Ventilation and Utility Passage (LVUP): Of 16 units, 8 are finished.
  • Flyover-Cum-Interchanges: Three units are actively under construction.
  • High-Performance Concrete (HPC) Units: All 104 planned units have been added to the project scope.
  • Aqueduct: A newly introduced aqueduct has been completed.

Regional Impact

Officials believe the road will significantly enhance the transport landscape of Srinagar. “This project will not only ease traffic within the city but also bolster regional connectivity. We are confident it will be operational by December next year,” Mankar added.

The Srinagar Ring Road is expected to become a major milestone in regional infrastructure development, transforming the way residents and visitors navigate the city.
