MORTH announced a Rs 134 crore project to address traffic bottlenecks on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submitted it to MORTH for approval. “The project comprises a single package: one overhead bridge at the Children’s Hospital, a vehicular overpass at Muminabad Junction, and a 2-kilometre flyover on the Parimpora-Shalteng stretch. We expect formal approval by the end of July so we can proceed to tender the work,” said official from R&B Department for Central Kashmir. The official highlighted the strategic importance of these projects, which are expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency in Srinagar, benefiting both residents and businesses.

The proposed 2-kilometre flyover will feature four lanes, connecting Parimpora to Shalteng, and is designed to mitigate the persistent traffic snarls that daily commuters face on this stretch. Local authorities and stakeholders are optimistic about the transformative impact of the Parimpora-Shalteng flyover on the commuting experience. “If this flyover is constructed efficiently, we can expect a significant improvement in the traffic situation within the next two years. This will undoubtedly reshape traffic dynamics in the region,” said, a daily commuter.
The absence of an overhead bridge near the Children’s Hospital has posed severe risks to patients and their attendants. The 500-bed Children’s Hospital in Bemina, which began functioning in 2022, has faced significant challenges due to the lack of a zebra crossing and overhead bridge outside the hospital. This situation has forced people to cross the road amid heavy traffic, posing considerable risks to their safety.

Furthermore, ambulances face difficulties reaching the hospital during emergencies as they must take a U-turn two kilometres ahead of the hospital. The vehicular overpass at Muminabad Junction is considered a high-priority project due to the daily traffic jams that impede commuter movement. This overpass aims to streamline traffic flow and enhance overall connectivity in the area.
With the MORTH expected to approve these critical projects soon, the implementation of the Parimpora-Shalteng flyover and other related infrastructure developments is poised to significantly enhance the region’s traffic management and safety, bringing much-needed relief to commuters and residents alike.
