EXPLAINED: How Zimbabwe, Scotland & Netherlands Can Qualify For ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023
ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023: The 13th edition of the men’s 50-over event will start on October 5 in Ahmedabad with a match between England and New Zealand, the two finalists of the last edition, and the final will also take place at the same venue on November 19. A total of nine teams have so far qualified for the 10-team event, whereas one from Zimbabwe, Scotland, and the Netherlands will become the final team to book a trip to India.
Zimbabwe, Scotland, and the Netherlands are currently engaged in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 in Zimbabwe these days and have kept their hopes alive of making it to the multi-nation event that will be played across 10 Indian cities this year. As of now, the hosts, Zimbabwe, have the best chance to progress, but giant killers Scotland and the Netherlands can’t be ignored either.
Zimbabwe: With three wins in four matches played so far, Zimbabwe sits in the second position in the Super Sixes points table of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023. They need one more win to confirm their place in the ODI World Cup 2023. The African team will face Scotland in the sixth match of the Super Sixes stage on Tuesday (July 4) at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, and if they manage to get the better of them, they will qualify irrespective of the results of other teams. They will finish the Super Sixes stage with eight points from five matches, which Scotland and the Netherlands can’t match then. If the match between Zimbabwe and Scotland ends in a draw, then they have to hope that Scotland lose their next match against the Netherlands on July 6, and in that case as well, Zimbabwe will progress. But a defeat against Scotland will leave them dependent on the result of the Scotland-Netherlands match, and if Scotland win that game, they will qualify and Zimbabwe will get knocked out.
Scotland: Scotland have won two matches out of the three played so far in the Super Sixes stage. They will progress if they win both the remaining matches against Zimbabwe (July 4) and the Netherlands (July 6). But if they lose against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, they will get knocked out, and Zimbabwe will become the second team to qualify for the World Cup. If they beat Zimbabwe but then lose against the Netherlands, then Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and Scotland will all finish with six points from five matches in the Super Sixes stage, and the team with a better net run rate will progress. If Scotland lose both of their remaining matches, they will get knocked out.
Netherlands: The Netherlands sit in the fourth position with four points from four matches in the Super Sixes stage at present and will qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 only if Scotland beat Zimbabwe on Tuesday (July 4) and then they (the Netherlands) beat Scotland by a big margin in their last Super Sixes match on Thursday (July 6). In that case, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and Scotland will have six points each, and the qualification scenario will come down to net run rate, in which the Netherlands will stand a chance. If the match ends in a draw or they lose, they will get knocked out, and if Zimbabwe beat Scotland or that match gets washed out, then also the Netherlands will get eliminated. (TimesNow)
