Polytechnic students in Jammu and Kashmir demand online exams
Srinagar: Pass out students of various engineering polytechnic colleges in Jammu and Kashmir are demanding their exams of backlog papers should be conducted in the online mode because of the COVID-19 scare.
“We requested authorities to conduct our examinations in online mode for our backlog papers but they have already issued the date sheet in offline mode,” said Kamran Zahoor a polytechnic student.“How can we give offline exams in COVID-19?”
The students find it ironic that the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of Technical Education (JKSBOTE) is conducting exams in offline mode in the prevailing situation.
On approaching the authorities the students are denied any sort of help, said Zahoor. “They tell us that Covid was for everybody but offline exams are being conducted.”

Zahoor said that the authorities have been ignoring their pleas. “They don’t even respond to our calls now,” he said.
Almost twenty students from different engineering polytechnic colleges of the valley staged a protest at the Press Enclave Srinagar yesterday.
Another student from the Government Polytechnic College Jammu has the same story to narrate. “Why can’t they respond to us?”
He said that they have been facing problems in applying for engineering posts as they are yet to get the results of the diploma due to the delay in backlog papers’ examination. “We protested twice but nothing is happening.”
“I am a pass out but we are demanding to take our online exams of backlog papers,” said Farhan Bhat, a student of Government Polytechnic College Anantnag.
As per Bhat, their exams were supposed to be conducted in May-June 2019 but the authorities delayed it. “Now it’s January 2021 and we are still waiting.”
Bhat claims that the examination of Leh-Ladakh students was conducted online and the results were declared within three days. “ Why can’t they do the same with us?” he questions.
The students in Kashmir have protested almost six times, said Bhat. “ We want the authorities to take our examination as soon as possible but nobody is responding,” he said.
The Kashmir walla tried to reach the concerned authorities but so far, has not been able to get in touch with anyone. The story will be updated accordingly. [TKW]
