MeT Predicts Heavy rainfall and flash floods in J&K

Weather Advisory for Jammu and Kashmir
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a significant weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, indicating that heavy rainfall and flash floods are expected on September 2 and 3, 2024. Locals and tourists are urged to prepare for these weather changes.

Forecast Details

  • September 1: The day is expected to be mainly dry.
  • September 2-3: The region will likely experience intense weather, characterized by:
    • Generally cloudy conditions with intermittent light to moderate rainfall.
    • Thunderstorms in many areas.
    • Isolated heavy rain, which could lead to flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable regions

 

 

Safety Precautions

Authorities have warned of the potential for:

  • Flash floods and increased water levels in local streams and flood channels.
  • Waterlogging in low-lying areas.
  • Light snowfall over higher reaches, including trekking routes.

The Tourism Department has advised trekkers and tourists to stay informed about weather updates and to plan their activities accordingly to avoid hazardous conditions. Extra vigilance is particularly necessary in areas prone to landslides and flash floods. 

Post-Weather Outlook

Following this period of unsettled weather, generally dry conditions are expected to return on September 4-5, with some isolated rain showers possible on September 6-7. The weather should remain largely dry from September 8-12.
