How accurate are exit polls?
Exit polls can provide a useful snapshot of voter sentiment but are not always highly accurate. Their reliability depends on several factors, including sampling methods, voter honesty, and margins of error, among others. Historically, exit polls have produced mixed results. While they are often correct in predicting broad trends and outcomes in many elections, there have been notable misses where the actual results differed significantly, such as India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election. That’s why they should be treated with caution and not as definitive results.
Jammu and Kashmir Exit Polls 2024 Results Date and Time
On Saturday, several news channels along with pollsters are expected to make their predictions about the outcome of the poll results in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. The exit poll predictions are expected to be announced only after 6.30 pm on Saturday, after voting for the assembly elections is concluded at all the polling booths, ensuring that voters can cast their ballots without any external influence.
According to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) guidelines, outlined under Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the publication or dissemination of exit poll results is prohibited from the start of voting until half an hour after the polling ends.
The embargo is imposed whenever assembly or Lok Sabha elections are announced and is lifted once voting concludes in all states participating in that electoral cycle.
Elections in Jammu and Kashmir were conducted this year after almost a decade as the last elections were held in 2014. In 2014, most exit polls predicted a hung assembly in the erstwhile state. The exit polls proved to be accurate since J&K did not have a clear winner in the previous assembly elections and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed a coalition government.
In this electoral cycle, key political parties in the J&K are the BJP, National Conference and Congress, who contested the elections in an alliance, Peoples Democratic Party and several other regional parties.
