Good News: Modi Government Extends “PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana” to Provide Free Ration to Around 80 Crore NFSA Beneficiaries
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) till March next year, Union Minister Anurag Thakur told reports on Wednesday. Last year, the government had announced PM-GKAY for all beneficiaries covered by the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the wake of economic disruptions caused by the Covid-19 outbreak. “It has been decided to extend the ‘PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana’ to provide free ration till March 2022,” Thakur said.
The PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was supposed to end on November 30. As part of the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the Centre provides 5 kg of food grains free of cost to around 80 crore NFSA beneficiaries. In this scheme, the Centre has been giving rice and wheat to bulk consumers under the OMSS policy to improve availability in the domestic market and check prices.
“In the last more than 20 months, we have seen that the poor, even the middle class families have suffered, not here but globally as well. One of the reasons to help the poor families was to give them food grains,” said Mr. Thakur.
We still feel as the economy is getting back on track, the figures are looking much better. At the same time, Prime Minister wants to help those poor families who have gone through this COVID-19 pandemic, so that for the next four months, they should be helped and the food grains should be given to them,” he added.
Anurag Thakur further said the cabinet has also completed the formalities to repeal the three farm laws.”During the upcoming session of the Parliament, it will be our priority to take back these three laws,” he said.
