Good News: Jio voice calls to any network in India free from 1 January
The company announced that Jio has delivered on that promise and made off-net voice calls free again.
NEW DELHI: All domestic voice calls made by subscribers of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd to any network within India will be free from 1 January, said India’s largest mobile operator by market share on Thursday.
Come January 1, 2021, all voice calls from Reliance Jio to other networks in India will be free as interconnect usage charge (IUC) regime ends on Thursday (December 31, 2020).
“As soon as IUC charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting January 1, 2021. On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network,” the company said in a statement.
Over the last one year or so, Jio was charging customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to rival phone networks, but compensated subscribers by giving free data of equal value.
In September last year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had decided to discontinue the charges by 2021.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in September 2019 extended the timeline for implementation of the Bill and Keep regime beyond January 1. The Ambani-led firm Jio said it was left with no option but to start charging its customers for off-net voice calls at a rate exactly equivalent to the applicable IUC charge.
