7th Pay Commission Update: With Diwali around the corner, lakhs of government employees are expecting an increased bonus in their accounts. A group of railway employees recently met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav in Delhi to discuss this issue, urging that the Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) should be calculated according to the 7th Pay Commission instead of the earlier 6th Pay Commission.

In his letter, Sarvjit Singh has urged the government to act swiftly on this matter, requesting that the bonuses be recalculated in time for Diwali so that railway employees can celebrate the festival with financial ease and happiness according to the Zee Business report.

7th Pay Commission: Diwali Bonus Calculation

In a letter written by Sarvjit Singh, General Secretary of the Indian Railway Employees Federation (IREF), highlighted the current unfairness in the bonus calculation. At present, the PLB is calculated based on a monthly salary of Rs 7,000, which was set by the 6th Pay Commission.

However, the minimum salary of railway employees has increased to Rs 18,000 following the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission since January 1, 2016. Despite this, bonuses continue to be calculated on the older pay scale, which the federation called as unfair.

7th Pay Commission: Expected Diwali Bonus

Currently, railway employees receive a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ salary, but it is based on the older pay structure, resulting in a payment of Rs 17,951. According to the IREF, this does not adequately represent the actual earnings of the employees, given that the minimum salary in the Indian Railways is now Rs 18,000.

This demand, if accepted, would ensure that the employees are rewarded fairly for their contributions and receive a more substantial bonus, commensurate with their current pay structure under the 7th Pay Commission

The federation has argued that if the bonus were calculated correctly based on the 7th Pay Commission, railway employees should receive a bonus of Rs 46,159 for 78 days’ work, claimed the Zee Business report. This would result in an additional benefit of Rs 28,208 for each employee, reducing the gap between currently paid and what should be paid.

The federation hopes that the government will consider this request favorably, allowing employees to receive a much-deserved financial boost ahead of the festive season.
