Breaking: Atishi Appointed as New Chief Minister of Delhi

Atishi, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been unanimously chosen to succeed Arvind Kejriwal as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. This decision was made during a legislative meeting of the AAP on September 17, 2024, where Kejriwal proposed her name, and it was approved by all MLAs present.

Background and Significance

Atishi currently serves as a Cabinet Minister in the Delhi Government, overseeing crucial portfolios such as Education, Public Works Department (PWD), and Power. She represents the Kalkaji constituency and has been actively involved with AAP since its inception in 2013.

Her selection marks a significant moment in Delhi’s political landscape, as she will be the third woman to hold the Chief Minister position in the Union Territory, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.

Transition of Power

Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to meet with Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena later today to formally resign, which will facilitate Atishi’s appointment.

This transition comes shortly after Kejriwal’s announcement of his intention to resign, made just two days after his release from prison.

Conclusion

Atishi’s rise to the position of Chief Minister is seen as a pivotal moment for AAP, especially given her prominent role in the party during recent challenges, including the arrest of key leaders.

Her leadership is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the governance of Delhi as the city prepares for future elections
