At least 90 troops quarantined after 5 ITBP personnel test positive for COVID-19

New Delhi:(PTI): At least 90 troops of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are currently under quarantine after five jawans of the paramilitary force were tested positive for coronavirus.

Two of the jawans who tested positive for COVID-19 were performing law and order duty in the national capital during the ongoing lockdown.

“In the last 48 hours, 5 jawans of ITBP have tested COVID-19 positive in Delhi. 2 of them were performing law and order duty in Delhi with police,” ITBP statement said. “At least 90 troops have been quarantined,” an official said.

As reported earlier, this is not the first instance wherein a police/ armed forces unit has been affected by the novel coronavirus.

On April 29, 31st battalion of CRPF reported 12 fresh cases of coronavirus taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in that unit to 47.

“All jawans of 31st Battalion who tested positive came in contact with one jawan who tested COVID-19 positive during initial days. All personnel of this Battalion have undergone tests,” a CRPF official had said.

On April 30, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan deployed at a Delhi Metro station tested positive for the deadly disease.

On April 14, an Army doctor of Lt Colonel rank involved in fighting coronavirus cases tested positive for COVID-19.

“The Army doctor is posted in the national capital as part of the Army headquarters and was involved in the anti-COVID operations,” Army officials had said. Prior to that four Army personnel, including one doctor, were affected with COVID-19.
