Crucial Day For India Vs Pakistan Cricket- Asia Cup, World Cup fate to be decided
“If the government says that we can play in India for the World Cup despite India not touring Pakistan for the Asia Cup then we will be ready to do so,” Sethi told The Telegraph.
Asia Cup, World Cup fate to be decided: The upcoming seven days will be crucial for India vs Pakistan cricket. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will meet in Dubai to decide the fate of the jinxed tournament. It is all but certain that Pakistan will lose its Asia Cup 2023 hosting rights. But on the other hand, the decision will have a far-reaching impact on World Cup 2023.
- Decision 1: Will PCB’s hybrid model get BCCI’s nod?
- Decision 2: Who will host Asia Cup?
- Decision 3: Will Pakistan compete in Asia Cup if stripped of hosting rights?
- Decision 4: Will Pakistan visit India for World Cup?
The reason is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is playing hard ball. BCCI is in no mood to relent even as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has managed to convince other Asian nations. Instead, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who is also the head of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is preparing plans to have Asia Cup without Babar Azam & Co. However, a final decision is still awaited and is expected this week.
A report carried by The Telegraph claims that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who doubles up as the ACC President, has convinced the other members of the Asian Council to play in Sri Lanka. The same report has also claimed that the BCCI has refused the hybrid model of having matches in Dubai citing excessive heat in the Middle East in that time of the year as a reason.
“There is absolutely zero chance that Pakistan will host Asia Cup. We will also take it to the ICC so that the Champions Trophy is also shifted out. For now, Sri Lanka is likely to host the tournament. But a final decision will be taken only at the ACC meeting,” a senior BCCI official close to the development told InsideSport.
According to sources, it has been disclosed to The Telegraph that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will receive a clear message during the upcoming executive board meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The message will convey that all the other participating nations have unanimously agreed to play the tournament in Sri Lanka.
Despite being designated as the hosts for this edition of the tournament, the PCB has failed to garner support for its proposal and is left with no choice but to comply with the decision to hold the tournament in Sri Lanka or withdraw from hosting it altogether.
“If the government says that we can play in India for the World Cup despite India not touring Pakistan for the Asia Cup then we will be ready to do so,” Sethi told The Telegraph.
What is PCB’s Asia Cup 2023 Hybrid Model?
- In the new hybrid model, the tournament will be played in two halves.
- In the first phase, Pakistan will host Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal.
- The 2nd phase will have India’s matches at a neutral venue.
- Sri Lanka is the preferred destination as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are opposing UAE due to heat.
- The neutral venue will also host the final even if India fail to qualify.
- Once the ACC officially announces the hybrid model, the schedule will be announced at the end of June.
