After Air Strike Iran says Pakistan Friendly and Brotherly Country
Iran’s top diplomat said that the country targeted an “Iranian terrorist group” in Pakistan after Islamabad said the strike killed two children. Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, “None of the nationals of the friendly and brotherly country of Pakistan were targeted by Iranian missiles and drones”, adding, “The so-called Jaish al-Adl group, which is an Iranian terrorist group, was targeted.”
Amir-Abdollahian said Iran’s attack on “Pakistan’s soil” was a response to the Jaish al-Adl group’s recent deadly attacks on the city of Rask.
The strike in Pakistan came after Iran also launched attacks in Iraq and Syria against “anti-Iranian terrorist groups”.
“The group has taken shelter in some parts of Pakistan’s Balochistan province,” he said, adding that “we’ve talked with Pakistani officials several times on this matter”.
Iran’s foreign minister asserted that Tehran respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan but would not “allow the country’s national security to be compromised or played with”.
Iranian Strike Leaves Pakistan With No Easy Options for Response
An Iranian airstrike inside Pakistan on Tuesday that Iran said was aimed at militant training camps has left Pakistani officials facing a difficult decision about whether to retaliate and potentially expand the turmoil that has swept the Middle East.
Relations between Pakistan and neighboring Iran reached a new low after Iran’s attack in the restive Baluchistan region, with Pakistan reporting civilian casualties, including children, and warning that the violation of its sovereignty could have serious consequences. On Wednesday, Pakistan expelled the Iranian ambassador to Islamabad and recalled its own ambassador from Iran.
In a statement, Pakistan said it “reserves the right to respond” to what it called an illegal and unprovoked attack.
“The responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran,” it added.
But beyond the diplomatic protests and warnings, it was not immediately clear if Pakistan, which is reeling from political and economic crises and headed for parliamentary elections next month, is in a position to strike back militarily or enter into a drawn-out conflict with Iran.
Pakistan expels Iranian ambassador, recalls its envoy after ‘unprovoked’ missile strike
Pakistan has recalled its ambassador and expelled the Iranian envoy after a missile strike that killed two children. Local media reports indicate that the attack took place near Panjgur in southwest Balochistan and injured three others. Tehran said that two bases belonging to Jaish al-Adl militants in Balochistan province were destroyed on Tuesday without claiming credit for the incident. The development also comes amid an escalating Middle East crisis led by the war in Gaza.
