Weather Update for Jammu and Kashmir
28 Aug: Today’s weather is expected to be generally cloudy, with light to moderate rain showers likely across many areas. No significant rain is expected. As the day progresses into evening and night, these weather activities are anticipated to increase, particularly over North Kashmir. A rain cloud system is expected to linger over North Kashmir (particularly Kupwara), receiving a continuous supply of moisture, which may result in light to moderate rain showers during the night, with a possibility of this system extending into parts of Central Kashmir (40% chance). Meanwhile, the intensity of rain is expected to be lower over South Kashmir.
*29 Aug:* The continuous flow of moisture will likely broaden the coverage of rain, with rain showers expected in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, especially during the afternoon.
Day temperatures are expected to drop further and in Kashmir plains may stay around 18 – 23°C.
*30 Aug:* Cloud formation is expected to start over Jammu region in the very early morning hours and may extend to Kashmir region afterwards, leading to possible rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir. However, the latest forecasts suggest some uncertainty, hinting that the overall intensity may stay lower than 29 August. If rain continues throughout the day, temperatures in the plains could stay between 16-20°C. Otherwise, improvement is expected from the late afternoon onwards with better day temperatures.
Overall, rainfall is expected to fluctuate between tonight and August 30th, with various areas experiencing showers at different times with different intensities.
(*Most likely Scenario:* Today intermittent rain showers are possible. On the night of 28th Aug, rain showers are possible over Kupwara and may extend to other parts of north Kashmir. On 29th Aug, rain showers are expected in most parts of J&K. During the evening/night rain showers are expected to start from Jammu region and afterwards will extend to Kashmir. By 30th August morning another spell of rains would have occurred in many areas. Rains may continue in some parts, particularly in Kashmir, till afternoon/late afternoon with improvement afterwards.)
*Note:*
1. Highest intensity of this weather system is expected over Kupwara district and higher reaches of north Kashmir like Gurez Valley.
2. Some higher elevations may receive season’s first snowfall. Highest possibility for north Kashmir parts, followed by south Kashmir.
3. Under continuous showers, there is a high risk of flash floods/cloudbursts with the highest risk for north Kashmir, followed by Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Rajouri districts.
4. Shooting Stones/Landslides possible over Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
