Babar Azam Breaks Another Virat Kohli’s Incredible World Record With Century Against WI; Becomes 1st Batter In The World
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam became the first batter to knock three successive one-day international hundreds twice as he anchored a five-wicket win over the West Indies in Multan on Wednesday.
Ranked number one batter in both limited overs formats, Azam cracked a brilliant 107-ball 103 with nine boundaries to help Pakistan overhaul a tough 306-run target in 49.2 overs
Babar’s 17th ODI century in 87 matches.
However, that is not the only record Babar achieved during his century knock in the first ODI in Multan. The right-handed batter also became the fastest to score 1,000 runs as captain in the format. He reached the four-figure mark in his 13th innings as Pakistan captain, surpassing India’s Virat Kohli, who had reached the figure in his 17th innings.
Babar also went past the likes of South Africa’s AB de Villiers (20 innings) and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (23 innings) for the feat. The Pakistan captain currently holds the no.1 spot in the ODI rankings for batters.
Fastest to 1000 runs as ODI captain:
- 🇵🇰 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝘇𝗮𝗺 𝟭𝟯 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀
- 🇮🇳 Virat Kohli 17 innings
- 🇿🇦 AB de Villiers 18 innings
- 🇳🇿 Kane Williamson 20 innings
- 🏴 Alastair Cook 21 innings
Earlier, Imam-ul-Haq (65), Mohammad Rizwan (59) and Khushdil Shah (41*) made significant contributions as Pakistan chased down a 306-run target with four balls to spare. West Indies rode on the century knock of opener Shai Hope (127), but their middle-order — barring Shamarh Brooks (71) failed to step up.
Babar Azam in the post-match presentation
“I always try to continue my game and work on my strengths. There was a little bit of a problem during the calling when I was batting with Imam. But it got better as the partnership moved on. The wicket was a little double-paced and wasn’t that easy. There was heat but that is not an excuse. Credit to the bowlers. Shadab came back and did well. The standards he sets on the field is brilliant as well. Cricket is changing. We have to plan and play with a lot of intensity,” Babar said at the post-match presentation.
